Introduction to the department.
Surgery Department of KMDCconsists of three Surgical Units and fous departments of allied specialties (Neurosurgery, urology,Orthopedics,Burns & Plastic Surgery). All of them are situated in Abbasi Shaheed Hospital , which is the teaching hospital of KMDC. The total number of beds of the three surgical unit is 121. each unit is headed by a Professor with major qualification. The total number of admission from Jan, 2002 to December, 2002 was 2738.
Medical student of MBBS & BDS are posted in batches for clinical teaching. Each batch consists for six students.
The lecture program/topic are decided and reviewed before the start of new session by the numbers of faculty surgery. The lecture schedule for the whole year is prepared and handed over to the teacher's. At the end of the session there is a pretest of MCQ type. A feed back is also taken from the students at this time which is used to plan/ organize teaching programmed.
Every unit at the completion of clinical posting organizes a ward exit "MOCK VIVA" and the result is marked in the grade book. the hours of clinical posting and lecture hours are according to PMDC guidance.
There is also a log book for the House Surgeons where a weekly assessment is noted down.
Clinic pathological meeting is held twice a month.
The department has got its regular publication for the last 3 years by the name of "SURGICAL NEWS LETTER".

Museum/Library
It has got good
number of Pathological Specimens, X-rays, Books & Journals (list enclosed).
There is reading facility with desk for 6 students. Sitting arrangement for
20 more students. There are many x-ray illuminators for use in x-ray library
with good collection of x-ray films.

| Surgical Skills |
Basic surgical skills (Hand & instrumental knots Reet Knot, Deep Cavity Knot, Surgeons 'Knot, Simple sutures, Mattress Suture, handing of sharp & other instruments) Is taught on special Boards. Laparoscopic Surgery is taught on specially designed board. Dummy & Maniqueen is available in the department for teaching purposes. |
