Introduction to the department.

Burns and plastic surgery is a thirty four bedded unit. In Karachi, it is one of the two public sector Government hospitals to accept all major adult burns patients.

This unit also deals with cold plastic surgery cases including congenital anomalies (commonest, hypospadies, cleft lip & plate), post burn contracture, bedsores, head and neck reconstruction after cancer or trauma, major skin loss of limbs after trauma and hand surgery. We have special interest in total nasal reconstruction. Cosmetic surgeries are also done, though it constitutes less than 10 percent of the total.

We have lists of operations thrice a week. Our theatre has two tables running simultaneously. We have one OPD and two ward days. We are trying our best to provide complete service for needy and poor patients.

The high mortality rate is due to major burns, which on admission have average burns above 50 percent. In recent times number of suicidal burns have increased due to socioeconomic conditions in the city.

The commonest congenital anomalies coming to us are for cleft surgery and hypospadias.
