Introduction to the department.

The department of pediatrics Karachi Medical & Dental College & Abbasi Shaheed Hospital is recognized for undergraduate and Postgraduate studies MCPS/FCPS.

The department is headed by a Professor and assisted by 1 Assistant Professor, two Senior Registrars, 07 RMOs and two Medical Officers. The nursing support is given with three full-time senior staff nurses with other auxiliary staff taking care of babies day and night.

The total bed strength is 60, this includes two 20 bedded general pediatric ward, a neonatal intensive care unit which can accommodate up to 10 sick babies, on very busy 24 hours emergency unit and vaccination section.

Service

The pediatric department is providing a wide variety of services to a population of approximately 3 million, which includes:
1. outpatient department including routine and follow-up clinics, a nutritional clinic and a vaccination clinic.
2. Pediatric emergency.
3. Oral & intravenous re hydration unit
4. General pediatric ward
5. Newborn intensive care unit
6. Vaccination clinic
7. T.B. Clinic
8. free hepatitis B Clinic

Teaching program

The department has an extensive teaching program for undergraduates and postgraduates. At the undergraduate level, we are organizing weekly theory classes, daily bedside teaching and clinical tutorials. At the end of their posting the students are assessed by MCQ testing and graded accordingly. At the postgraduate level, presently the department has two MCPS 6 DCH students. The academic activities include tutorials, case discussions, journal club etc.
