Introduction to the department.

Pathology is the systematic study of disease, their cause, symptoms and treatment. Broadly speaking this subject deals with derangement of tissue structure and function in disease, related with clinical signs and symptoms.

The clinico pathological approach is of primary importance in clinical practice and need to be taught thoroughly. In third year, clinical teaching and ward rounds are introduced and this is the time when a medical student's mind starts recognizing and questioning about the mechanism and root cause of disease i.e. pathology, pathology has been divided in to general pathology & special pathology. General pathology accompanied with microbiology and parasitology is taught in third year.

General pathology deals with general reaction and response of a cell and tissue to abnormal stimuli causing diseases. Microbiology is the study of micro organisms, which are the most common cause of disease in developing countries, so are the parasites. Study of the organism help to understand the mechanism of the diseases.

Special pathology deals with specific reactions and changes seen in specific diseases. Study of this help in diagnosing and treatment of patients. Special pathology is taught in fourth year along with clinical subjects.

Basic principles are taught, supplemented by practical work at undergraduate level. Audiovisual aids are freely used in teaching.

Laboratory and museum have been developed extensively for teaching pathology, microbiology and clinical hematology. Two hundred specimens are available in museum, which constitute integral parts for better understanding of pathology.

Besides, pathological lab is available in ASH, which helps the physicians & surgeons:

1. To diagnose disease
2. To follow the course of the disease
3. To treat disease
4. To participate in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

A ten headed teaching microscope has been installed in a separate room of the department in order to make the teaching lively. A working medical library is available in the department along with all the paraphernalia. Adequate staff, equipment and allied facilities are available in the department.

Continuous assessment of students is done as a usual routine. A sound knowledge of pathology is absolutely essential to become a good doctor, untiring efforts are beings made by the experienced and dedicated teachers to achieve the desired objective.
