Introduction to the department.

The department of Orthopedic Surgery is located on the second floor of Trauma Centre, Abbassi Shaheed Hospital. There are (83) beds in Orthopedic ward. Administratively the orthopedic department is divided into two units. Orthopedic out patient clinics are held daily, where the daily attendance of patients is around 150. Average number of admission in Orthopedic ward in one year is 1000. Operating facilities for Orthopedic surgery are provided in twin theatre suit, which is equipped with state of the art orthopedic theatre table and X-ray image intensifier. Recently video camera facility has been installed so that surgical procedures can be watched on TV monitor/ recorded on video to facilitate teaching. Comprehensive range of surgical procedures are performed including latest techniques like interlocking nailing, orthoscopic surgery and joint-replacement surgery.

The department organize an elaborative program of teaching for undergraduates as well as Postgraduates. This include teaching grand rounds, tutorials and formal/informal teaching sessions. The department is recognized by College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan for FCPS training. Weekly clinical meetings are held in which leading orthopedic Surgeons of the city participate.

Currently a program is being implemented under which the clinical data pertaining to orthopedics in patients (including theater record) is being computerized. A special software package has been developed with a view to establish a comprehensive clinical database which will be used for evaluating clinical performance (surgical audit) adopting measures to maximize output and above all research.

Future plans include setting up a Learning Resource Centre (Project already underway) and setting up Laminar Air Flow system in Orthopedic theater.
