Introduction to the department.

The Department of Ophthalmology, Abbasi Shaheed Hospital is in a separate building with the ENT department. This building was donated by Ibrahim Ali Bhai trust in 1980. It has a bed strength of 34 with 17 for males and 17 for female patients. It also has a separate operation theatre with four operating tables. The outpatient section caters to about 50,000 per year where 3000 major & 3000 minor surgeries are performed yearly.

The department is recognized by the College of Physicians & Surgeons, Pakistan for FCPS & MCPS training. The Karachi University & PMDC have recognized it for training of undergraduates. It is fully equipped to train up to 100 graduates per year.

Training Program

The training is done on latest equipment that is on slit lamps, teaching fundus cameras. Operating microscopes with attachments are available in operation theatre, audiovisual cassettes and slides are also available in a large quantity, the faculty and staff are motivated and committed to provide quality care and training to its undergraduates and postgraduates.

Future Plans

We aim to establish a departmental library with latest journals for improving quality of training and care which should be possible in the next couple of years. We aim to acquire equipment for viterctomy laser for providing latest care to patients.
