Introduction to the department.

The aim of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is to attempt to reduce high Maternal and Paternal morality of the country through the teaching & training of under-graduates and post graduates in preventive & curative aspect of the subject. Eventually, it is hoped that these trainees will be valuable contributors towards the development of health systems for the country and the training of the other health personal eg. Nurses and lady health visitors who play an important role as first line health care providers to the women and children of Pakistan.

TRAINING PROGRAMME

The department trains the students of 3rd & 4th year, 4th year and 5th year MBBS of KMDC. It is also a recognized training centre for M.C.P.S & F.C.P.S. (Membership & Fellowship, College of Obstetricians & Gyneacology, U.K).

Facilities
(The department of Obstetrics & Gynecology of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital comprises an OPD situated on the ground floor and inpatient wards on the first floor with the labour room and the emergency theatre. Elective surgery is performed on the second floor in the main theatre. The in-patient facility comprises of 107 beds divided into three units with incharge consultants.

The department has structured undergraduate and postgraduate training program which include teaching round, weekly clinical sessions, case presentations, journal club, maternal/paternal morbidity and mortality meeting. Guest speakers, well renowned in particular subspecialties are invited to deliver lecture at weekly clinical sessions. There is active liaison with the department of Pathology, Pediatrics and community medicine conducting a research project and some of these have been presented at national clinical meetings and conference.

The department library is furnished with latest textbooks, reference books and journals (local and international) as well as video cassettes onselected topics. Internet facilities are available during official hours. Technology for patient care includes hysteroscopy, laparoscopy and sardiotocography (CTG).
