Introduction to the department.

The department of ENT and Head & Neck surgery of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital has always been regarded as one of the best-equipped unit, which has introduced facilities like brain stem evoked response audiometry and laser surgery. The operation theaters are well equipped with latest instruments and recently the instruments for functional endoscopic sinus surgery have been acquired. A complete audiovisual system exists in a theater for teaching the undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Located in the sensitive area of the city, this department deals with large number of trauma cases. There are two well equipped operation theatres for major head and neck surgery.

Training Program

The department is recognized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan for membership and fellowship by the Karachi University for the Diploma Laryngology and Otology (D.L.O). Many of the doctors have done their post graduation. At present three are trainees of FCPS and MCPS in the department on the way to complete their requirements.

The teaching program includes weekly journal club, case presentation, clinicocardiological and clinicopathological meetings. Monthly combined Head & Neck meetings are arranged with other Hospitals, which are largely attended by ENT surgeons of the city. Detaild teaching round is carried out twice weekly.

Achievements

Works is being done in different modalities of the faculty and original papers have been presented at national and international forums and articles published in reputable journals.

One of the major success stories of the department is the establishment of its department library, which is the best of its kind in any public sector hospital of the province. it has more than 150 reference books and four international and two national journal of over ten year duration. The department has internet facilities, which is used by both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Future Plans

The department aims to excel in training of under & Post graduate students of Karachi Medical & Dental College & Abbasi Shaheed hospital. It also plans to acquire latest equipments to offer quality services for better patient management.
